What are some specifics about the operational version of UW-NMS?
General info about UW-NMS
The model starts each night around 11:00 PM CST (04 UTC) and finishes a
48 hour forecast by around 7:00 AM CST (12 UTC).
The model grid dimensions are as follows:
- 160 km outer grid (44x36 points, centered at 103 W, 50 N)
- 80 km middle grid (52x34 points, centered at 92 W, 39 N)
- 27 km inner grid (29x35 points, centered at 89 W, 45 N)
- All Grids use 26 points in the vertical. The bottom 5 points use 200 m
resolution. Above this, the grid spacing stretches by a factor of 1.15 to a
maximum of 1300 m.
Radiation and convective parameterization tendencies are computed on each grid
every half hour.
To finish in a reasonable amount of time, operational version of UW-NMS uses
a scaled down version of the gridscale microphysics parameterization, where
only rain and snow are activated.
